POSITION SUMMARY:
The Welding Engineer provides robust welding knowledge, is self-motivated, able to work well with others, and utilizes both technology and engineering principles to overcome challenging obstacles.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Develops and maintains weld procedure specifications and process qualification records for welding processes at the manufacturing facilities.
Investigates welding related issues to improve product performance and increase productivity
Conducts failure analyses and cause analyses to troubleshoot welding problems and provide corrective solutions.
Evaluates equipment and welding procedures to ensure they are safe and effective.
Participates in new product development and design to advise on welding feasibility/best practices.
Coordinates with other specialists such as architects, engineers, and construction crews to ensure that welding projects meet code requirements.
Creates and implements new welding methods, equipment, and procedures to improve efficiency and productivity.
Works with suppliers and integrators to design and launch new welding equipment/machines.
Assists in the procurement of new manufacturing equipment, including: welding and thermal cutting equipment specifications (both manual and automated equipment)
Advises on part fixturing to develop new processes and improve existing ones
Attends new equipment buyoff events and evaluate welding/cutting capabilities of the equipment
Supports plants as needed to facilitate production goals.
Stays up to date on new processes and technology (training, certification, trade shows, etc.).
ALL OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Degree Required: Associate Degree in Applied Science Welding Engineering or Welding Engineering Technology
Preferred Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or Welding Engineering Technology
Certificate(s) or License(s): Certified Welding Inspector and/or Certified Welding Supervisor is preferred
Experience: 3-5 years of experience (3+ with bachelor’s degree; 5+ with associate degree), Robotic welding experience strongly preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:
Proven history working with the following applications: Aluminum GMAW, Aluminum GTAW, Galvanized Steel GMAW, Plasma Cutting (Steel and Aluminum), Laser Cutting (Steel and Aluminum)
Proficient with the Microsoft office software suite
Solid understanding of GD&T
Time management – this position will be expected to manage their time and schedule while handling multiple concurrent projects with limited oversight
Ability to work on solo projects as well as within a team
Excellent communication skills to bridge the gap between corporate leadership and plant welding operations
Experience working with robotic welding systems is strongly preferred but not required
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Occasional over/multi night travel will be required for training and new equipment buyoff activities. Overnight travel time estimated at 10% but could be deviate slightly. Regular day trips to the manufacturing facilities required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Regular computer work, walking, standing and sitting
Occasional lifting up to 50lbs
INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:
Develops objectives and general policies and procedures for a specific program or functional area of responsibility within general scope of established operational goals and plans. Day-to-day work and decisions do not require direction or review by immediate supervisor. End results are reviewed by supervisor.
