Are you someone who has a passion for cycling footwear and an insatiable learning engine?  The Trek footwear team is looking for someone who will help take Trek’s footwear performance and quality to the next level. With Footwear being one of only 3 contact points riders have with their bike, it’s paramount to the riding experience. Whether it’s an elite athlete competing at the highest level or kids hitting the local bike trails, you’ll have the opportunity to make an impact on their ride!

We’re looking for an engineer to be our expert in helping to improve the testing, performance, and quality of our footwear. Somebody who can help us create test plans, standards, and develop product that meets those standards. You’ll be responsible for taking production projects from cradle to grave – collaborating with the footwear design team to create products we love and working with our suppliers to get them to store shelves.

You’ll also need to think beyond the status quo to develop new technologies and designs that will push the performance limits of cycling footwear in all rider categories. You will succeed in this position if you can use the learn fast, learn cheap mentality, and excel at making your visions a reality. 

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with industrial design team to create new footwear that passes internal test standards and meets product parameters through material selection, structure optimization, and process engineering.
• Create and review 3D models and 2D engineering drawings.
• Communicate directly with suppliers via 2D drawings, 3D models, and verbal/written communication. 
• Work with footwear developers and suppliers to create and complete test plans
• Update existing testing standards and create new testing standards based off customer feedback and warranty claims.
• Work with Trek Factory Racing teams to create footwear that meets their specific needs.
• Translate customer/rider feedback into product specifications. This includes plate (outsole) design, MTB midsole and tread design, compound selection, and construction.
• Lead internal R&D efforts. Work with team to generate ideas and discover new areas to explore
• Provide expertise to internal product development teams, athletes, marketing, and other internal customers
• Initiate and coordinate highly successful implementations of new technologies into production projects
• Seek out collaboration opportunities (both internal and external) that can be incorporated or adapted to achieve meaningfully unique products or solutions.

Specialized Skills and Knowledge:

• Takes new ideas or core concepts and runs with little direction
• Extremely comfortable 3D modeling (CAD).  Surfacing skills preferred.
• Strong mechanical aptitude
• Broad range of material & process knowledge in fabric, leather, thermoplastic, CFRC, and rubber
• Works well both individually and in highly collaborative environments
• Experience creating 3D printed prototypes
• Able to analyze and interpret data to make decisions.
• Effectively balances multiple projects, responsibilities, and tasks.
• Innovation mindset geared towards hands on learning, creating and testing
• Leads by example with curiosity, constant learning, and a learn-fast, learn-cheap approach to work. 

Position Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, materials science, or equivalent
• 5 years' experience in an engineering or related field with a high degree of R&D focus and product development or equivalent
• Proficient in CAD Software
• Passion for and knowledge of high-performance cycling footwear

• Stays informed of new technology through contact with suppliers, technical publications, and seminars
• Ability to research and develop new testing methods to improve performance and quality
• Assist legal department with patents and related issues for new and existing product.
• Experience with statistics, advanced mathematical modeling, and analysis programs such as FEA and CFD
